Anuradhagama which is made by King Pandukabhaya is presently called as Anuradhapura. The King Devanampiyathissa introduced Anuradhapura as atamasthana,
as the result of introduction of Buddhism. Anuradhapura is the first capital of SriLanka. It is 209Km away from Colombo. The memory of the kings of ancient Sri Lanka was alive in the legend and folk history. You can see ancient places like Ruwanweliseya, Abhayagiriya, Jethawanarama, Kuttampokuna, Sri Maha Bodiya, Samadi Buddha Statue, Esurumuniya, Mihinthalaya etc… in Anuradhapura. We do not provide all ancient details through the web because it is better if you can visit there and find details and see ruins by your self.

Isurumuniya


Isurumuniya is famause for Statue of Isurumuni Lovers. The temple carved out of solid rock, houses a large statue of the seated Buddha. You can climb up steps to the top of the rock above the temple to get a good view of the countryside.


6th Century Gupta style carving. The woman, seated on the man's lap, lifts a warning finger, probably as a manifestation of her coyness; but the man carries on regardless."The figures may represent Dutugemunu's son Saliya and the law caste (Sadol Kula) maiden Asokamala whom he loved.
