Fishing in Sri Lanka

Catching fish is normally called as fishing. Fishermen use different Fishing techniques such as hand gathering, spearing, netting, angling and trapping based on fish’s migration, foraging & habitat. Equipments which used by fishermen are hooks, lines, sinkers, floats, rods, reels, baits, lures, spears, nets, gaffs, traps, waders and tackle boxes.

 Most important traditional fishing technique is a stilt fishing. 

In Sri Lanka fishing industry based on sea, rivers & tanks. Negombo, Kalutara, Beruwala, Bentota, Pasikudah, Kalkudah, Mirissa, Weligama, Tangalle, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Vankalai, & Kilali are major fishing areas based on sea.
